Assistant/Associate Professor of Building Science
Position: The McWhorter School of Building Science at Auburn University seeks applications for a full-time, tenure track faculty position at the assistant/associate professor level. The vision of the McWhorter School of Building Science is to be the global leader in education and innovation in the built environment. The mission is to create stimulating learning experiences for our students by engaging them in the discovery of the techniques and management of construction.
Position Description and Duties:The candidate chosen should be willing to engage in innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary teaching, research and/or scholarly outreach and service activities. Current areas of teaching needs are Building Structures, Construction Informatics, MEP Systems, and Project Controls. A typical tenure track faculty workload is 70% teaching, 25% research and/or outreach, and 5% service; the percentages are negotiated with the School Head on an annual basis. The successful candidate is expected to:
- Teach undergraduate, graduate, distance learning, and/or hands-on courses. Opportunities to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate electives are available. A full list of courses can be found on our website: https://cadc.auburn.edu/construction/
- Develop an active program of scholarly research and/or outreach scholarship in accordance with the school and university mission.
- Actively direct Masters and PhD student research.
- Participate in service activities in support of the school, college, and university mission.
- An earned doctorate in Construction, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional employment in the construction industry that is relevant to the areas of teaching needs.
- Potential to teach undergraduate and graduate courses as mentioned in the position description.
- Evidence of construction related research/scholarship.
- Evidence of excellent communication (oral, written, and digital) skills.
- Evidence of successful teaching of undergraduate and/or graduate construction courses.
- Demonstrated experience in high-impact teaching practices and active learning.
- Evidence of an active research/outreach program, including publications and presentations in appropriate venues.
- More than five years of progressive experience in the construction industry.
- Advanced education, certification, professional registration, licensure, or other relevant credentials.
- Ability to teach emerging and/or interdisciplinary topics in the built and virtual environment.

Salary: Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and based on a nine-month academic year. The McWhorter School of Building Science maintains an aggressive summer program for graduate and undergraduate students, and summer teaching positions are available. Faculty members are provided a substantial travel budget to encourage participation in professional and academic endeavors.

School Description: The McWhorter School of Building Science (BSCI), established in 1947, is the second oldest construction education program in the United States. BSCI maintains a proud tradition of practical and professional construction education, offering an undergraduate degree in Building Construction, a Masterâs Degree in Building Construction; and a PhD in Building Construction. BSCI is an active member of the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) and is fully accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). The School is a part of the College of Architecture, Design and Construction, hence offering opportunities for collaboration. The School has 21 full-time faculty members with a student population of about 600. It has six named professorships and one endowed chair, all generously supported by alumni. The School has more than 4,000 alumni, including many who lead the industry in Engineering News Recordâs top ranked firms.
The construction industry and BSCI alumni are extremely supportive of the School and its activities. The School has a unique Construction Industry Fund, supported by contractorsâ licensing fees since 1992, that supports research for the construction industry, program enhancement, faculty development and continuing education. Substantial recurring funds have been committed to support the school in its mission to deliver the highest quality construction education. The McWhorter School is housed in the dedicated 36,000sf LEEDÂ® Gold rated M. Miller Gorrie Center that was the result of industry and alumni generosity and leadership. The School has significant endowment funds that also support research and program enhancement. Recently, the school has received a unique gift that is dedicated to foster student engagement with service learning.
The school is a leader in exploring Information and Visualization technology applications in construction and construction education, working with industry leaders in seeking solutions to construction industry challenges, creating collaboration opportunities between disciplines, and maintaining outreach activities.
The M. Since 2000, the school has maintained an active study abroad program for undergraduate and graduate students. This program helps our students to have an awareness of construction on a global scale while exposing them to other cultures. Approximately 25% of our students gain an international experience before they graduate.
