Job Summary


The Huntsman Mental Health Foundation (HMHF) seeks a qualified candidate to be the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications. This role is an exciting opportunity for a creative, transformational, and energetic communications expert to make their mark in a well-positioned, forward-thinking, nationally recognized academic medical institution.

The incumbent will work collaboratively with the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) and the Marketing & Communications department of the University of Utah Health Sciences (UUHS). The Senior Director will be a member of the HMHI Communication Team and the HMHI leadership team.

This position will report to HMHF.

About the Role

The Senior Director of Marketing & Communications will be an energetic, intellectually curious leader who can inspire and mentor a team and articulate both the strategic communications goals behind the programs they oversee. They will possess a healthy balance of left and right brain skills, including strong people management and a solid understanding of budget management and metrics.

The successful candidate will possess a creative problem-solving and data-driven mindset. They will build and maintain a comprehensive communications strategy for all external marketing and communications initiatives and manage an annual marketing and brand budget for HMHF and HMHI.

They will define and socialize a content-oriented communications strategy and operationalize best practices for audience definition/segmentation channel distribution. They will establish the institution’s deployment of engaging, high-quality content across various channels, including blogs, audio platforms, social media, syndicated content, email, print, radio, video, and TV campaigns.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Content creation (blogs, donor/grateful patient & family stories, press releases, etc.) and social media strategy
  • Oversee and implements external communications needs, including emails and drafts for the CEOs of HMHF and HMHI and other leadership
  • Oversee the production of marketing and communication materials; e-newsletters, brochures, program flyers, website content, social media, e-blasts, news releases and alerts, press kits, videos, community awards/recognitions
  • Maintain and advocate for all creative content and established strategies of the HMHI Brand Book across all communications, events, posts, and publications
  • Set goals and outline strategies to grow awareness, drive donor interests and define metrics to track marketing and communications results
  • Mentor and supervise junior team members
  • Serve as the senior liaison with the University of Utah and U of U Health marketing and communications teams

Specific Duties

  • Directs the development and implementation of marketing and communications objectives consistent with the mission, vision, and values of HMHF and HMHI
  • Develop and implement strategic external marketing, including advertising and media buys, to promote philanthropic support and the achievements and accolades of HMHF/HMHI
  • Leads all aspects of the HMHI and HMHF annual report and coordinates the strategic distribution of these reports to the appropriate constituencies
  • Develop media campaigns utilizing multiple media forums
  • Advises the development of effective communication strategies to external constituents
  • Provides strategic direction by setting short and long-term goals, estimating budgetary requirements for staff, space, and equipment planning, and implementing special projects and policies
  • Work collaboratively with HMHI and the University of Utah marketing and communications professionals to promote a consistent message to the general public and HMHF/HMHI donors
  • Forecasts staffing, capital, and operating budget needs in evaluating and reporting on market sensitivity, financial analysis, space utilization review, staff performance evaluation, etc.
  • Ensures management/supervisory staff competency through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and ongoing staff performance evaluation
  • Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships
  • Coordinate and lead Ad Council Campaign work related to the Stigma Grand Challenge
  • Serves as a member of the leadership group for the Communications team for the national grand challenge to eliminate mental health and substance use disorder stigma
  • In partnership with CEOs of HMHI and HMHF, create marketing pieces for philanthropic efforts (annual report, stewardship reports, etc.); lead efforts to create materials that engage donors
  • Oversee all solicitations and collateral materials for fundraising efforts for branding and messaging
  • Lead content strategy for fundraising solicitations and collateral materials for fundraising events
  • Ensure coordination between clinical marketing and HMHF to ensure consistency in brand presence and messaging
  • Partner with the CEO of HMHF on the development and implementation of the marketing and communications budget for HMHF


Incumbents in this position can manage assigned units and designated programs and services. They are responsible for resolving diverse patient/customer, family, and community issues affecting customer/patient service and care. Directs the unit’s budget planning and administration and makes spending decisions within budget guidelines. Oversees program development for assigned units and ensures policies and procedures are followed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related area, or equivalency; eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in fundraising communications is preferred.
  • Experience with a national ad campaign is preferred.
