Apply

Company description

Gwenyn Hill Farm is a diverse 430-acre farm situated in the rolling hills of the Kettle Moraine in Southeast Wisconsin, about 30 minutes west of Milwaukee. We grow Certified Organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers on just over 12 acres. We also raise grass-fed beef and lamb, milk a herd of organic dairy cows, and pasture organic laying hens.

We sell to our customers via a 280-member CSA, an on-farm store, a local farmers market, and a small wholesale business. The farm began operations in earnest in 2018, so we are constantly growing and changing.

Job description

Gwenyn Hill Farm is hiring full-time, seasonal employees for the 2023 season. Se habla español.

Farm Crew Members work with our management team, crew leaders, and farm staff to perform day-to-day operations on the farm. This work includes but is not limited to: greenhouse production, planting, weeding, harvesting, mulching, trellising, washing, packing, CSA and Farmers Market customer service, gathering eggs, general farm maintenance such as mowing, and accurate record-keeping.

Seasonal Schedule

May through November. Exact start and end dates for this seasonal position will be determined during the interview process (end date is somewhat flexible).

Skills Desired

Work on the farm is very physical and is performed under all weather conditions. Farm crew members must be able to work independently and in a group setting, and be conscious of efficiency and quality.

Applicants for the Farm Crew position will ideally have at least one season of related experience caring for plants, either at another farm, or at a greenhouse or nursery.

We are interested in employees who have a desire to work on the farm for more than one year, with opportunities for additional responsibilities and pay raises.

Requirements

Applicants must have a valid driver license, be legally authorized to work, and be able to lift 50 pounds.

Hours & Compensation

Work hours are generally Monday-Friday from 8 am to 6 pm with a one-hour unpaid lunch break. Wages for seasonal employees begin at $15 / hour. Overtime is not paid to agricultural workers in Wisconsin.

Special assignments such as CSA distribution or farmers market sales will be agreed upon in advance and will require occasional weekend or evening work.

Educational Opportunities

Working on an organic farm means that you will be in a constant state of learning. Every day provides new tasks, new challenges, and new opportunities. We grow 75 different vegetables. Learning how to plant, transplant, care for, harvest, wash, pack, and cook these vegetables is a great learning experience for seasonal employees.

We also participate in the Organic Vegetable Farm Manager Apprenticeship program. This is a paid, on-the-job opportunity for apprentices to work with experienced farmers to develop their skills and learn the ins-and-outs of what it takes to run a successful farm business. Gwenyn Hill Farm is committed to providing affordable housing close to the farm for as many interested employees as possible. Employees may apply for shared rental housing if there is a vacancy. Employees may also secure their own housing.

Because our farm is located in an area with little access to reliable public transportation, we only recommend that applicants with a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle apply.
