Description
Responsible for coordinating Health and Safety activities in assigned areas, including power generating plants and the Corporate Office. This includes providing day-to-day OSHA compliance support, conducting routine compliance assessments/audits, identifying and conducting safety-related training, and supporting the Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program (RESAP). This position is also responsible for developing and implementing regulatory compliance programs and processes in order to continuously improve the health and safety performance in assigned areas.
The Safety Coordinator will be expected to be an advocate for the OPC Safety & Health program, be a resource for associates at all levels of the organization, work with minimal supervision to set priorities and complete work tasks, and demonstrate the initiative to resolve issues through creative problem solving.
Job Duties:
- Provide daily direction, leadership, and coordination of activities involving the Health and Safety programs in assigned areas. Mentor and coach associates and management on safety compliance issues through active participation on SafeTeams, in safety meetings, and in safety training. Responsible for preparing, maintaining, standardizing, and updating safety policies and processes required by the Safety and Health Manual.
- Develop and implement programs and processes to continuously improve the safety performance in assigned areas. Activities include self-assessments, audits, bench marking, peer reviews, procedure development and revisions, outage reviews, and operational and maintenance reviews. Monitor any new federal or state standards, identifying potential impact and action plan for compliance.
- Provide appropriate safety training or contract safety training to assigned locations.
- Assist in the preparation, application, and maintenance of the Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program (RESAP).
- Investigate accident/incident reports as a basis for recommending corrective action with management and follow up on all accident investigations and check corrective actions taken to eliminate accident causes or potential hazards
- Remain abreast of technological advances and regulatory compliance issues affecting the safety and well-being of all Associates.
Required Qualifications:
Education:Bachelor's Degree in safety, industrial hygiene, Technical Education, Engineering, or other related field.
Experience:Eight (8) years as a safety professional in an electrical generation and transmission utility or a closely related industrial setting.
Equivalent Experience:Candidates with two (2) year degree plus ten (10) years related experience as a in an electrical power generation utility or a closely related industrial setting or twelve (12) years related experience in an electrical power generation utility or a closely related industrial setting.
Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:Current certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals is desired. Valid driver's license which meets the insurance eligibility requirements under the Driver Qualified Program.

- General knowledge of the Workers' Compensation requirements.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent instructor presentation skills, strong planning and project management skills, and excellent organization and time management skills. Demonstrated working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization. Ability to travel to power generating plants located throughout the state of Georgia as circumstances require. Power plant environments are industrial in nature, so must be able to navigate stairs, ladders, and hot/cold, noisy environments with heavy equipment and machinery. Must be able to wear hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and other protective equipment as required.
Percent of travel involved:50% mostly same day in-state travel to support power generation facilities.
Unusual hours may be required of this position. Requires frequent field trips for assessments, meetings, training and support. The generating plants operate on a 24-hour basis. At time may be on-call in the event of any incidents/accidents that are related to the health and safety of any associate or affects the operation, rating, or reliability of the Corporation's assets.
