Description:

A PhD student assistantship including a stipend, a health insurance, and a full
tuition waiver is available in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at
Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA). This position will provide a unique
opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project in close collaboration with
research scientists of NASA Langley Research Center. The main focus of this
project is on the development of new positivity-preserving entropy stable
schemes for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured grids. Our
group has a history of producing highly educated, independent, exceptionally
productive PhD students and postdocs. A typical PhD study in the group leads to
multiple publications in top journals such as Journal of Computational Physics,
Journal of Scientific Computing, Computers & Fluids, AIAA Journal, etc.,
participation in national and international conferences and meetings, and ample
opportunities for networking with leading research scientists from NASA,
national labs, academia, and industry.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated PhD candidate with a
M.S. or B.S. degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or a closely
related field. A solid background in numerical methods for PDEs, strong hands-on
experience with programming in Fortran 90 or C++, and effective communication
skills (written/spoken English) are required.
