ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is looking for a Manager, Renewables Origination to join our growing US Renewables Development team to advance TransAlta's customer relationships and the development of renewable projects in the United States. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of the corporate sustainability drive and is a proven contributor with success in building long-term customer relationships and creating value through leveraging the organization's core competencies.

As the Manager, Renewables Origination, you'll take responsibility for identifying, connecting, and managing business relationships with customers desiring US renewable projects; developing, communicating, negotiating, and executing power purchase agreements that meet customer needs and achieve TransAlta financial metrics; and designing and implementing a communication plan that drives customer engagement. You'll work collaboratively with TransAlta's business development, engineering, and trading teams to advance TransAlta's growth strategy for US renewable development. 

This is a full-time salaried position based at TransAlta's US Renewables office in Boulder, Colorado with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. 

WHAT YOU WILL DO  

  • Grow TransAlta's corporate customer business through proactively identifying, developing, and maintaining strong customer relationships

  • Generate and close corporate power purchase agreement opportunities for TransAlta's portfolio of renewable development projects

  • Understand clients' needs and articulate the opportunity and benefits of engaging TransAlta for corporate power purchase agreements

  • Understand the customer's decision-making process, ensuring the engagement of the necessary key influencers

  • Proactively engage load-serving entities on ancillary services contracts, including reactive power and capacity

  • Lead the negotiation of all customer contracts, including PPAs, REC agreements, capacity contracts, and other ancillary services contracts for TransAlta's renewable facilities

  • Lead and mentor junior origination and analytical staff

  • Develop and continuously update a pipeline of current and prospective customer opportunities

  • Follow and communicate various customer, market, industry, regulatory and technology trends

  • Deliver key financial results related to the development and contracting of renewable development projects

  • Act as a professional and credible representative of the organization at networking or industry events

  • Facilitate internal discussions to build consensus helpful in executing corporate power purchase agreements

  • Generate extensive internal and external network that facilitates the promotion of TransAlta as an industry leader and renewables partner

 

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

 

  • Undergraduate University Degree or College Diploma or Significant Industry Experience

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible, professional experience in the renewables industry

  • Successful track record of managing relationships with business customers

  • Deep understanding of the advancing corporate move towards sustainability along with the North American renewables and power markets

  • Strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills 

  • Proven negotiation skills, with a demonstrated history of success in negotiating high-value contracts

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including leadership of direct reports

  • Ability to identify areas of growth and develop and implement plans/actions to achieve that growth

  • A proven track record of establishing contacts and credibility with key decision-makers

  • Well-developed negotiation, financial, project management, planning, and organization skills

  • Self-starter who works well independently but who can also work collaboratively in a diverse team towards a common shared goal 

  • Ability to build trusting customer relationships with internal/external customers and with the corporate sustainability community 

  • Ability to influence, negotiate and facilitate buy-in with a variety of stakeholders across functions

  • Ability to initiate and lead adaption to change in a complex environment

  • Commitment to conducting business, working with colleagues, and interacting with community stakeholders, partners, and customers with integrity at all times

  • Effective in a variety of formal presentation settings: one on one, small and large groups; effective both inside and outside the organization

  • Ability to effectively represent TransAlta in political government, customer and partner engagements

  • Strong business acumen coupled with personal accountability and an exemplary work ethic
