The Van G Miller Adult Learning Center is looking for an English Language Learning Lead Instructor/Coordinator to join their team. While working at the Adult Learning Center, you are helping make a meaningful impact on the everyday lives of their students. Students are empowered to get the education and skills they need to thrive at work, school, home and in their community all while earning their high school equivalency diploma or learning the English language.

Specifically, as a full-time English Language Learning (ELL) Lead Instructor/Coordinator, you are working alongside our Manager of ELL and Family Literacy to lead and support a dedicated and experienced group of ELL Instructors. Additionally, you are teaching non-credit Integrated English Language and Civics Education (IELCE) and ELL classes to ELL students who are motivated to increase their English language proficiency, digital literacy skills and develop new work skills to help them gain employment or better employment. You also have the have the opportunity to learn about new areas (technology, construction, childcare, etc.) alongside your students.

Essential Job Functions

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teaches Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education(IELCE) and/or English Language Learning (ELL) classes as assigned.

  • Develops IELCE and/or ELL classes to include subjects in vocational trades, construction, childcare, workplace technology and other areas.

  • Assists in curriculum development and improvement for new and existing classes.

  • Provides professional development (e.g., best practices, integrating technology, current research) for ELL and other AEL staff as appropriate.

  • Assists Manager with implementation of Department of Education initiatives, including College and Career Readiness Standards, English Language Proficiency Standards, 21st Century Employability Skills, STAR Reading, and Program/Instructor Standards.

  • Collaborates with other college departments to ensure successful transition of English language learners to postsecondary education and training at Hawkeye Community College.

  • Assists in the organization and facilitation of special events to include hiring events, worksite visits, and completion ceremonies.

  • Seeks opportunities for students to gain employability skills as well as employment assistance.

  • Collaborates with workforce development to integrate workforce services into programming.

  • Serves on the Integrated Basic Education Skills and Training (I-BEST)/Integrated Education and Training (IET) planning team to identify and implement new programming and classes.

  • Assists with coordinating volunteers in the ELL program.

  • Collaborates with college and community personnel to ensure increased student achievement and rates of transition to postsecondary education and training.

  • Makes recommendations for purchases of new teaching materials, digital tools, and equipment.

  • Maintains program records and collaborates with college personnel on all necessary data tracking, ensuring program compliance with federal, state, and college requirements.

  • Stays current on research involving student attendance, persistence, and retention.

  • Provides substitute ELL teaching coverage as needed.

  • Participates in campus committees as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Unless otherwise approved under Hawkeye’s remote work policy, regular on campus and/or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, TESOL, English, instructional technology, or a related field.

  • One (1) year of teaching experience.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to complete additional trade certifications.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise professional judgement.

  • Demonstrated ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings.

  • Knowledge of general office and classroom procedures and protocols.

  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate classroom technology.

  • Demonstrated ability to create lessons tailored to specific skill levels

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate students and apply retention techniques.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and follow complex oral and written directions.

  • Must be welcoming, self-motivated, independent, willing to participate in required professional development, and detail-oriented with lesson plans, class records, and paperwork.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public.

  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal communication.

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.

  • Demonstrated ability to execute organization and department policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters in TESOL or Education.

  • K-12 Certification.

  • Experience teaching Adult Education and Literacy, Integrated Education and Training (IET, IELCE, I-Best) and/or adult ELL classes.

  • Experience in skilled trades and workforce training.

  • Experience with instructional/classroom technology.

  • Bilingual

Working Conditions

Anticipated schedule is Monday – Friday daytime hours and Tuesday – Friday evening hours with the ability to create a schedule that includes split shifts or “early outs”.

Work is performed either in or a combination of an office setting or classroom setting using technology in a climate-controlled environment. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move frequently during working hours. During course of day, interact with students, faculty, staff and the general public in person, by telephone and computers.

Employment Status
