The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE) in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks a visionary, innovative, and inclusive leader as Chairperson who will continue to enhance our position as a top applied economics department. The targeted start date is July 1, 2023, but is negotiable. The Chairperson's major responsibility is to maintain and enhance a creative and productive environment for AFRE faculty, staff, and students. The Chairperson leads in developing and implementing departmental strategy and serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the department. Specific administrative responsibilities include: (1) leading program development and funding for domestic and international teaching, research, Extension, and outreach; (2) interacting with campus units, off-campus professional groups, stakeholders, donors, and government leaders; (3) recruiting, mentoring, and managing faculty and academic staff; (4) developing and managing departmental funds, facilities, and personnel; (5) fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (6) reporting to the Dean of Agriculture and Natural Resources and working with the directors of MSU AgBioResearch, MSU Extension, and others to accomplish departmental goals and objectives.
The Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics: As one of the leading applied economics departments in the U.S., AFRE is ranked in the top five for research in agricultural economics by RePEc. The department has approximately 26 tenure system faculty including two Associate Chairs (one for undergraduate programs and one for graduate programs), 32 fixed term faculty and academic staff, 10 administrative staff, 65 graduate students, and 400 undergraduate students across three majors (Agribusiness Management, Food Industry Management, and Environmental Economics and Management). We address societal policy questions and solve practical problems for producers, consumers, and the environment. Our undergraduate and graduate programs prepare the next generation of economists and managers to meet the needs of the food, agricultural, and natural resource systems in Michigan and around the world. The Department supports a large international program, including overseas faculty assignments and active working relationships in numerous African and Asian countries. Location: The position will be based at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, USA. Minimum Requirements
An earned Ph.D. in agricultural, food, or resource economics, or a closely related discipline; tenurable at the Professor level in AFRE; evidence of excellence as a scholar in research, teaching, Extension, and/or outreach; and evidence of excellence in leadership, communication, management, and commitment to the Land Grant mission. The successful candidate will possess a vision for the future of AFRE; the capacity to guide a unit that delivers nationally and internationally recognized programs; and a demonstrated commitment and aptitude for administration of an academic unit, including academic and administrative staff.
