Position Description:

University of Iowa Health Care (UI Health Care) seeks a dynamic, experienced and distinguished executive to serve as its next Chair and Department Executive Officer leading the UI Department of Dermatology. The Carver College of Medicine and the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics are equal partners in UI Health Care. The Carver College of Medicine is a part of a major research university and ranks among the top public medical schools by U.S. news and World Reports. UI Hospitals & Clinics is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States and is adjacent to the Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a vibrant community located in the rolling hills of southeastern Iowa. The community offers excellent schools, quality entertainment, literary, musical, and cultural opportunities, as well as Big 10 sporting events.

The Department of Dermatology has a distinguished teaching, research, and clinical faculty, with a number of outstanding faculty who are national and international leaders in their respective subspecialty and research areas, and is equally balanced with experienced, skilled senior members and energetic, creative junior faculty members collaborating on patient care, research, and education. The UI Department of Dermatology is known nationally for the breadth and depth of its skin health services with more than half of the providers listed among America’s Best Doctors in the field of dermatology.

The Chair of the Department is the leader of all aspects of the Department’s enterprise, serves as the spokesperson for the faculty, and represents the Department in interactions with the college, UI Health Care, and practitioners throughout the state and nationally. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment and appointments; educational, clinical and research programs; fiscal planning and management; and short- and long-term strategic planning.

Education Requirement:

Board Certification in Dermatology and licensure or eligibility for licensure in the state of Iowa. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Progressive administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center environment and Department of Dermatology.

  • National recognition for achievement in clinical, educational and/or research pursuits that would warrant a tenured appointment.

  • Record of accomplishment for developing a research infrastructure and extramural funding.

  • Excellent strategic skills, administrative experience and financial acumen.

  • A minimum of five years demonstrated leadership achievement in a large volume, high-performing, contemporary Department with comparable complexity to the University of Iowa (UI), Department of Dermatology.

  • A commitment to fostering racial, ethnic and gender diversity in students, residents and faculty.

  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated interpersonal skills, allowing for transparency, respect, effective problem resolution and ethical decision-making.
