In these courses, students will demonstrate knowledge of the health and subsequent fitness appraisal of individuals wishing to begin an exercise program and prescribe appropriate exercise using these appraisals for individuals with varied goals and limitations. They will also demonstrate knowledge of the key structural elements of functional anatomy, including major muscles, bones, and movements, and apply the scientific process and principles of physiology to understand how the body responds to the immediate increased physiological demands of exercise as well as how it adapts to repeated exercise training. Students will also understand the roles of the cardio-respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal, and digestive systems of the human body to produce movement under various physiological demands. Finally, they will apply principles of pre-participation screening, risk stratification, and appropriate exercise program design to increase cardio-respiratory fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility in populations with pre-existing conditions or exercise requirements.

Requirements for these positions include a minimum of a master’s degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Nutrition and Wellness, or a related degree. If the degree is in a related field, the candidate should have at least 18 graduate credit hours in these areas or a related academic area.
